WYSA Weather and Air Quality Protocols
The weather in Winnipeg can be unpredictable at times. WYSA has implemented a protocol for managing less than ideal conditions during the outdoor season.
The first thing to know is that individual Clubs control and assign fields, so WYSA relies on them to determine whether a field is playable. WYSA will only intervene on city-wide cancellations. Otherwise, it is up to the host Club to decide whether a match can be played.
If the forecast predicts poor air quality, high humidity, rain, thunderstorms, snow, sleet, hail, or other adverse conditions, WYSA will post an advisory on its website and social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) advising that conditions are being monitored.
A decision will be posted by 4:00 PM regarding the status of evening matches. Unless a cancellation is posted or communicated directly, all teams and match officials must still arrive prepared to play.
If matches proceed as scheduled, only the match official has the authority to abandon the match at the field due to unsafe or unplayable conditions.
Thunder and Lightning Guidelines
If you hear thunder or see lightning, seek shelter immediately — “When thunder roars, go indoors.” After the last thunder or lightning, wait at least 30 minutes before returning to the field.
A match may be abandoned if there is not enough remaining time to finish safely. Officials and teams must notify WYSA immediately so that the outcome can be determined.
• Humidex 35-39: Matches proceed as scheduled. One water break per half may be allowed. • Humidex 40-45: WYSA may delay kickoff or reschedule. Multiple water breaks will be permitted and added time applied. • Humidex 46+: All matches are cancelled and rescheduled.
WYSA follows the following guidelines based on the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI):
• AQHI 3 or below: Continue playing as normal
• AQHI 7-10 at kickoff: WYSA will reschedule the match or arrange alternative indoor facilities.
