Stage 1 and 2: U4-U8 LTPD Implementation

Stage 1 & 2: U4-U8 LTPD Implementation

The first three LTPD stages, which guide development up to age 12, are built around small-sided games. There are no league standings for these age groups; the focus is on learning and fun. In Winnipeg, soccer programs are generally organized and run through our Community Centers, and as such WYSA has recommended the following structure for all U4 - U8 soccer programs:

A) Stage 1, Active Start, for ages 4 & 5:

Gives the youngest players the opportunity to develop basic movement skills like running, jumping, landing, kicking, throwing, and catching in a fun setting built around informal play and positive reinforcement.

We recommend two sessions per week for approximately eight weeks, 30-45 minutes in duration, adults and children play together informally with fun drills, max 12 players to a team with a ratio of 4 players to 1 coach.

B) Stage 2, Fundamentals, for ages 6-8:

Allows children to develop their movement ABCs— agility, balance, coordination, and speed—and learn the basics of the game while emphasizing fun, cooperation, and maximum time on the ball.

Recommended ratio of 1:6 coach to players:
i.              U6 - 3 v 3 with max roster size of six, co-ed
ii.             U7 - 4 v 4 with max roster size of 8, boys and girls to play separately
iii.            U8 - 5 v 5 with max roster of 10 players, boys and girls to play separately
