Choosing the Right Level of Soccer
There are two different streams of soccer that you can choose between the ages of U9-U17:
Community Centre Recreational Soccer (U9-U17) or FC Northwest Grassroots (U8-U10) / FC Northwest Developmental Soccer (U11-U12) / FC Northwest Premier Soccer (U13-U17)
Community Centre Recreational Soccer (U9-U17)
The Recreational League Process:
- Focuses on individual & team development through practice and games to prepare players for the next level.
- Organized through the home community club (CC) and FC Northwest (FCNW) under WYSA.
- All teams are considered community teams.
- Players register through their home community centre.
- Transfer guidelines apply per CC, FCNW, and WYSA policies.
- Team coaches are overseen by the community centre, FCNW, and WYSA.
- Parent & player guidelines apply regarding registration, age-advancement, and conduct. See www.winnipegyouthsoccer.com for details.
- Outdoor soccer runs May-June with a final Jamboree in early July.
- Indoor soccer runs November-March.
- One additional practice per week is recommended but not guaranteed.
- Recreational fees are typically 30-40% lower than developmental fees.
FC Northwest Grassroots Soccer (U8-U10)

FC Northwest Developmental Soccer (U11-U12)
- The D-League provides a foundation for athletes aspiring to reach higher levels of competition.
- Players are challenged technically, physically, and mentally as part of their development.
- Players should strive to demonstrate their personal best and elevate training standards.
FC Northwest Premier Soccer (U13-U17)
- The Premier program serves high-performance players seeking advanced training and competition.
- Many players are selected annually for the Manitoba Provincial Program.
- Top athletes may progress to CSA Regional Training Centre (RTC) or Prairie NTC opportunities.
- Some players may ultimately represent Canada at the National level.
- Premier players must meet high standards of commitment and performance.
- Premier soccer demands significant time commitment from players and families.
- Attendance at games, practices, and tournaments is expected.
The Developmental / Premier Soccer Process:
- Focuses on long-term individual & team development across the pathway from U9 through U17.
- Organized by FC Northwest (FCNW) under WYSA oversight.
- All teams are considered district teams.
- Coaches are supervised by FCNW and the Club Head Coach.
- Guidelines apply to attendance, conduct, uniforms, commitment, tournaments, and travel.
- The One Season Model runs Feb-July, breaks briefly, then resumes Aug-Oct.
- Games occur 1-2 times weekly; practice ratios target 2-3 practices per game.
- Players must attend assessments and register to secure a roster spot. Assessments are designed to create balanced teams.
- Developmental fees are typically 30-40% higher than recreational fees.
