Choosing the Right Level of Soccer

There are two different streams of soccer that you can choose between the ages of U9-U17:

Community Centre Recreational Soccer (U9-U17) or FC Northwest Grassroots (U8-U10) / FC Northwest Developmental Soccer (U11-U12) / FC Northwest Premier Soccer (U13-U17)

Community Centre Recreational Soccer (U9-U17)

The Recreational League Process:

  • Focuses on individual & team development through practice and games to prepare players for the next level.
  • Organized through the home community club (CC) and FC Northwest (FCNW) under WYSA.
  • All teams are considered community teams.
  • Players register through their home community centre.
  • Transfer guidelines apply per CC, FCNW, and WYSA policies.
  • Team coaches are overseen by the community centre, FCNW, and WYSA.
  • Parent & player guidelines apply regarding registration, age-advancement, and conduct. See www.winnipegyouthsoccer.com for details.
  • Outdoor soccer runs May-June with a final Jamboree in early July.
  • Indoor soccer runs November-March.
  • One additional practice per week is recommended but not guaranteed.
  • Recreational fees are typically 30-40% lower than developmental fees.

FC Northwest Developmental Soccer (U11-U12)

  • The D-League provides a foundation for athletes aspiring to reach higher levels of competition.

  • Players should strive to demonstrate their personal best and elevate training standards.

FC Northwest Premier Soccer (U13-U17)

  • The Premier program serves high-performance players seeking advanced training and competition.
  • Many players are selected annually for the Manitoba Provincial Program.
  • Top athletes may progress to CSA Regional Training Centre (RTC) or Prairie NTC opportunities.
  • Some players may ultimately represent Canada at the National level.
  • Premier players must meet high standards of commitment and performance.
  • Premier soccer demands significant time commitment from players and families.
  • Attendance at games, practices, and tournaments is expected.

The Developmental / Premier Soccer Process:

  • Focuses on long-term individual & team development across the pathway from U9 through U17.
  • Organized by FC Northwest (FCNW) under WYSA oversight.
  • All teams are considered district teams.
  • Coaches are supervised by FCNW and the Club Head Coach.
  • Guidelines apply to attendance, conduct, uniforms, commitment, tournaments, and travel.
  • The One Season Model runs Feb-July, breaks briefly, then resumes Aug-Oct.
  • Games occur 1-2 times weekly; practice ratios target 2-3 practices per game.
  • Players must attend assessments and register to secure a roster spot. Assessments are designed to create balanced teams.
  • Developmental fees are typically 30-40% higher than recreational fees.
