Assessments vs. Tryouts at FC Northwest:

  • Players who register for the U9-U12 Developmental League will be taking part in our FC Northwest One Season Assessments. The purpose of these assessments is to help with team formations as we anticipate the growth of our developmental numbers for 2024, while also ensuring we create balanced teams for age groups that have more than 1 team.
  • Players who register for the U13-U17 Premier League will be taking part in our FC Northwest One Season Tryouts. The purpose of these tryouts is to help create competitive teams for all age groups, resulting in potential roster cuts and/or P1/P2 selection depending on registration numbers.

How to Prepare for Assessments/Tryouts:

  • To save some time at the check-in table, please try to upload a headshot of your son/daughter to their RAMP profile online so that we can associate a face to a name for the 2024 Assessments/Tryouts. Alternatively, this can be done during the check-in if time permits.
  • Players will be asked when they check-in if they have any preferences regarding positions, so we recommend discussing with your child if they have a primary or secondary position preferences (Options include: Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder, Forward) (More advanced positions for U13+ include Central Midfielder, Full-Back, Winger, etc.).
  • We will be sending some further detailed information this weekend regarding what criteria we will be looking for during the assessments that associate with each assessed skill.

What to Bring to Assessments/Tryouts:

  • All players will be asked to check-in at the check-in table prior to entering the field, so please arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to your specific session.
  • All players will receive a numbered pinnie that they must wear for the duration of the assessment/tryout.
  • Be dressed in appropriate soccer attire for all sessions (cleats, shin guards, shorts, and ideally a white shirt).
  • Ensure your child brings a labelled water bottle and note that the facility only allows water to enter the playing field.

What to Expect at Assessments/Tryouts:

  • During the 2-day assessment/tryouts, players will be put through a number of drills and small-sided games that could focus on:
  • Technical Skills: Dribbling, Receiving (ground/air), Passing (short/long distance), and Shooting (power/accuracy)
  • Tactical Skills: Decision Making, Field Vision, Positioning, Communication, and 1v1 Attacking/Defending
  • Physical Skills: Speed, Endurance, Agility, and Physicality
  • Psychological Skills: Composure, Competitiveness, and Focus/Concentration
  • We will be sending some further detailed information this weekend regarding what criteria each of the above skills will focus on.

Assessment/Tryout Assessors & Feedback:

  • The 2024 One Season Assessments/Tryouts will be assessed by our Club Coordinator (Austin Benevides), our Technical Lead (Serhiy Zan), and possibly a Third-Party Assessor (Combination of FCNW alumni, University soccer alumni, and impartial assessors).
  • All assessment/tryout participants will receive a detailed player assessment form following the completion of the assessments/tryouts that will identify a player's strengths and challenges
  • The goal behind our player assessment forms is to focus on player development and target key areas that players excel at or could use some extra work on throughout the 2024 season.

Assessment/Tryout Fees:

  • There will be a small fee of $30.00 for all players that register for the 2024 One Season Assessments/Tryouts that can be paid online through credit card or paid in office by cash, cheque, and debit.
  • The $30.00 assessment/tryout fee is collected to cover the cost of field rentals and to provide all players with a detailed player assessment form following the second assessment/tryout date.
  • If you still owe a balance for assessments/tryouts, you can bring it to the first assessment date.

Following the Assessments/Tryouts:

  • Invitations for Team Selection will be sent out on Friday January 26th, and we aim to hear back from all families confirming their roster spots to finalize team rosters by Monday January 29th.
